Flesh & Bone

Her body was synthetic with home grown organic layers of skin grown on a giant miniature matrix, each beam measured in pico- and femtometers. Oil ran through her veins instead of blood and her body was neither thirsty nor felt hunger. Yet she always returned to one particular, specially made prosthetic body. It was comfortable; her soul was neither squished within it nor stretched thin to fill it.

She could run off the numbers instantaneously, the autonomic computer constantly monitoring her physical health and sending detailed reports to her brain in a near continuous stream. They worked well together. Old friends that never seemed to grow tired of seeing each other despite modifying her body as the years progressed, aging gracefully even when she could remain perpetually young.

There was some value in youth, but much more in showing some age.

She had many bodies, but none had stayed with her as long as the one she most often used in Section 9. She always returned to it; she always found comfort and familiarity in it. The body known as Kusanagi never tired her out or made her weary. They ran as one, wholly, completely.

Kusanagi sat up from the bed, disconnecting the wires that kept her logged into the internet, connected to her alternate 'homes.' They had their uses, and Kusanagi was used to maneuvering more than one at a single time. It always surprised the competition when she outflanked them.

But even so, home was supposed to be a room, a place where one returned to, where one found solace, not a single body, a piece of flesh that was so easily destroyed. Kusanagi glanced at her watch and smiled. At least she knew she'd never have to leave her home behind.
