Snow Heavy Night
Nayuki ran through the winter night, tears streaking her face with salt and dirt. It was quiet except for the minute sound of her breath leaving her lungs as she sprinted down street after street.
Where is he?
Nayuki rubbed a mitten-covered hand underneath her eye, brushing water from her cheek. She would have liked to believe it was nothing but snow flakes collecting on her skin. It would have been kinder.
Kaori was right; she should keep friends and family close.
If she could find him.
Nayuki dashed around a corner, her coat billowing behind her as she ran, dragging her steps as fatigue began to set in.
It wasn't Yuuichi's fault her mother was hospitalized. It wasn't Nayuki's fault the driver ran through the red light. She had told herself this a thousand times already, but was she ready to shrug off the guilt she bore? Could she? Nayuki slowed to a walk. She had 7 seconds to rest-up. No more; no less.
Her steps lead her past a confectionery, window lights dimmed. It was Nayuki's wish for Strawberry cake that lead her mother to walk down that street. She wouldn't have been near it if it wasn't because Nayuki loved the taste of the light cake and flavor of the strawberries that floated in delicate frosting.
Nayuki could almost taste the cake on her tongue, but it was bitter with salt and heavy with regret.
She could not control destiny. She could not make her mother wake-up from her slumber. She couldn't even heal Kaori's sister or bring back the friends she had made. Ayu and Makoto had left her behind. They all did.
But Yuuichi hadn't left yet. He had returned, almost seven years to late, but he had returned. Would he stay if she found him? Nayuki shrugged off the thoughts and picked up her pace, searching for her cousin.
He hadn't left her yet, had he?
