His Last Note
The soft strains of a violin echoed through the gathering, building, rising in volume and intensity with each caress of the bow across a single gold string. It ached with tenderness and brightly reverberated with hope.
Steadily, it played. It was not the bright fervent music of open honesty that she had once coaxed from the unmarked violin. Nor was it the bold yet unpolished strains of an aria slicing boldly through a concert hall, moving an audience with unrestrained joy and strength. It was different now, twined as it was with the effervescent tones of a trumpet. It was an odd harmony the two instruments made as guests listened with smiles on their faces, champagne glasses resting idly in their hands.
Yunoki despised that sound.
No longer would his flute be allowed to twine its beguiling tones with her sweet strings, nor would he be able to match his melody with the trumpet’s joyful declarations. Not as it once had with challenge and command. The piercing notes of Yunoki’s songs would fade into the air, alone, drifting on wayward breezes blending perfectly into the daylight, sighing softly with the moonlight.
It would be silent, when faced with the violin and trumpet playing now to commemorate the ceremony that just ended. His first friend, married. His first interest, the first person he let behind his exterior persona and who had not run away, was beyond his reach.
Turning his back on the loving scene, Yunoki strode out of the banquet hall leaving Hihara and Kahoko to their rewards. The Azuma family did not trust in relationships, and Yunoki was beginning to understand why. He did not need them as long as he had his music, but his heart ached, and he knew not how to comfort it. His music would remember, his lips would illicit dulcet tones, and Yunoki would remember.
How could he forget when it was Kahoko’s strength and open honesty which kept him playing all these years? His heart couldn’t bear the dreams any longer even though his flute would never forget. Standing next to the open door of the car, he looked back at the lights of the banquet hall one last time. Perhaps the Azuma family had it right; relationships were unnecessary. It was kinder to have never had then to have and lose.

I adore this line, for the simplicity and the weightiness of it, and because it is such a sharp contradiction to the paragraphs before it. Everything about the atmosphere, the music and the mood, radiates hope and happiness, and that line is like coming back to harsh reality.
He did not need them as long as he had his music, but his heart ached, and he knew not how to comfort it. His music would remember, his lips would illicit dulcet tones, and Yunoki would remember.
I really love how Yunoki's emotions are suppressed but still intense, and the way he knows that they'll always slip through when it comes to music. I love the irony there: his music is his solace, and yet he can't have his music without the feelings behind it, which hurt terribly.
In short, this is love, and totally worthy of more Last Exile. <3 You are so brilliant. ^_^

This is so late!
Date: 2007-11-04 03:37 am (UTC)I loved it. This fits so well with Yunoki. I feel like he's the guy who appears who has the perfect life, but he never really gets what he truly wants. He might have the money, a blue-blood wife, and clothes from top designers, but he never gets the girl who truly made him love, or lives the life he truly wanted.
Amazing Job! &hearts
