No, you're not bothering me although I'll have to let you in on a little secret. I actually haven't read any of the novel excerpts and have only watched KKM through once although I'm starting to rewatch the beginning of the series as I pick up the DVDs.
Partially, Yu's character evolved from the many attempts I tried to write this fic (hence why it took over 6 months to complete...when I wasn't being lazy that is) and partially his character derived from the idea that with each appearance of MaouYuuri, Yuuri took less time to recover from unconsciousness and also appeared to gain conscious control of his abilities. Eventually, we see that these two 'personalities' appear to have merged together to be Yuuri, Maou of Shin of Makoku. I took that idea and ran with it.
In general, I wouldn't be worried about contradicting canon. Even canon can be interpreted in many ways and whether you change your opinion or manage to make someone else think about yours seriously, it's worth bringing up. In fact, that's why I love fanfiction so much. Everyone has a unique view on each character and seeing them portrayed in different ways makes me understand them better. It doesn't matter if it's something that tells me, 'Hey! that's not how he would react!' because I have to justify why I think it's wrong. Likewise the same happens if he does something completely unexpected but I think it fits his character. It's all worthwhile.
